Over the 20 years I’ve been in business, I’ve learned that the design process can vary greatly depending on my clients’ vision and how involved they want to be. Sometimes people have an existing stained glass window in their home, or have seen something in person or online, which they ask me to use as inspiration for a new commission. Other times, they want to be involved but they aren’t as clear on what they want; I know with some coaching they will be able to identify styles they like and then I can begin to create some designs. Occasionally, clients have seen my work and are happy leaving the design process to me. While I love this, I’m sensitive to the fact that what I’m creating for them will be something they will be living with and seeing on a daily basis. I want the window to create “paradise” for them but I’m not always certain what their perception of paradise is. Often a visit to their home helps me get some important clues. My current clients are comfortable allowing me to design for them and had shared with me how they remodeled their entire home, looking to create a California ranch feel. Based on our discussions, I had some ideas in mind for what I might want to design. However, when I got there, they asked me if I would also create a wall sculpture, incorporating metal and glass for the space above this gorgeous fireplace. I was thrilled but suddenly my design ideas took a big turn. They suggested they might like the sculpture to have influences of India and reflect a deconstructed mandala. Knowing that I will be creating both the wall sculpture and the stained glass windows, I want to coordinate the designs to play off each other. It’s so much fun! I love that all of my clients have their own visions and my job is to work with that to create something amazing that is just right for them.
