To me, one of the most fun parts of making a stained glass window is choosing the glass. However, I’ve had a few clients tell me they were initially intimidated by the process. In order to help them find joy in it, I often ask them what colors they love and what colors they aren’t as fond of. When I was selecting glass samples to show my current clients, they told me they liked earth tones. Knowing that could go in a lot of directions, I brought a wide variety including amber, brown, yellow, green, and blue. Anticipating they might want some background glass that was more neutral, I also brought white, cream, and a selection of textured clear glass. I laid out the drawing and we discussed how many colors they might want to select. I told them that the number of different colors that people choose varies widely and often I can tell how many colors people will want by looking at their home décor and how they are dressed. Then we laughed because they were both dressed in simple, two color outfits and their home is decorated in a very soothing, minimal way. Imagine how surprised I was when they selected 19 different pieces of glass! But I think it’s coming together nicely. Some of the glass they selected is similar in color but has different textures or opacities and others are tints and shades of complementary colors; I think it’s going to be really satisfying to have that much variety. The other fun thing is their two windows will have slightly different designs and color placement. They will obviously go together but won’t match exactly which should add to the energy. This is the first window I am building and it keeps changing in interesting ways as I add new pieces. Stay tuned for more photos as it develops!
