(So Many White Men’s) Eyes on my Uterus

I just submitted my first piece to an art show at a museum in Wilmington, North Carolina— I guess I really live in NC now. This piece, titled, “(So Many White Men’s) Eyes on My Uterus,” is something I’ve been thinking about for a while. But having the deadline and structure of a show got me moving. The call to artists seeks “artist made lights” and I thought this might be a perfect fit for a copper uterus covered in glass eye balls! It has been a little tricky working on it in my shop; when people come in and want to see what I’m working on, I have to make a quick gauge of whether or not they really want to know. I am hoping that using a slightly absurd concept, title, and construction allows this piece to filter through some people’s defensive mechanisms-- that they find themselves laughing at all these silly eyeballs in such an inappropriate place and then realize that that is exactly the point.
