Flowers that are always in bloom

I’ve been working on this new commission of cherry blossoms for the past few weeks. Many of the steel blue background pieces have multiple concave curves which glass doesn’t always like. I knew when I was designing it that the background pieces would take a lot of patience. My client stopped in the other day; the last time she was here was when we finalized the drawing and glass selection. When she saw the window starting to take shape, she cried. It really is fun to see how big sheets of glass get cut down into small, individual pieces that become the image. I used to be hesitant to show clients how their windows looked while they were still “works in progress” because with no light coming through, they don’t look as beautiful as they will. I was afraid they would be disappointed. But seeing her tears, I knew that she was appreciating the process of seeing the piece come into being. It might not be as beautiful as it will be when it’s finished and hanging in her sunny window, but it’s a lovely step in the process.
