Dichroic fusing

I was asked to make a something for a local hospital fundraiser and had been coming up with ideas. I knew the item was going to be placed on a table during the event so a window wasn’t a good choice. I figured something freestanding was the best option and knowing how lighting impacts the way glass looks, I decided to work with materials that would be lovely regardless of the light. Years ago, a woodworker friend rescued two beautiful chestnut frames that used to house clocks. Because they can either stand on a table or be hung on a wall, I felt they were a good start. I was playing around with dichroic glass which has on it a coating that was developed by NASA to be used for astronauts’ helmets to protect their eyes from dangerous rays. It has the beautiful effect of appearing to change color depending on how light hits it. I decided to fuse the small dichroic shapes onto black glass for extra drama and to help with lighting issues. The spiral is a shape I really like and seems relevant to the positive energy needed in a health care setting. I still have the other frame and am thinking about how interesting it would be to make another piece with clear glass and dichroic pieces. Hmmm… I want to create a raffle item for my one year anniversary coming up in November… maybe…might be….
