When creating a commissioned window, one of the first steps is for me to take measurements. That visit has changed a bit since COVID-19 entered our world. Now, in addition to wearing masks, there are frequently more people at home. When I met with the home owner to measure for this window, the whole family was there and the room where this window is located had been converted into a classroom for their daughter. As I climbed up on a ladder to get a better look at the window, I had to move some toys, including a small Ruth Bader Ginsburg action figure. RBG was standing on the window ledge, in her robe, keeping watch over the new homeschool area. I generally make a point to not discuss politics with clients unless it comes up organically. But since I was standing there, holding RBG, we had a brief conversation and I said something like, “I will be careful with her since we need her to stay alive.” And then, a few days later, the news was announced that she had died. It felt a little surreal as do a lot of things these days. I feel grateful to be busy with work so I can sometimes, for a few minutes, not think about the chaos of the United States. I’m glad to create things that are pretty and make people happy and politics are (usually) not discussed. But it’s hard when we’re standing in masks, in a room in someone’s home which is now a child’s classroom not to think of all the ways politics weaves its way into our lives. I’m not one for imposing my view on others but I do feel strongly about one thing— we all must VOTE!
