Womens Voices flyer final.jpg

Transformations Gallery, of which I am a co-curator with Judy Weinberg, is pleased to announce our latest call to artists for a show titled “Women’s Voices.” As this is the 100th anniversary of women achieving the right to vote, we wanted to celebrate the power that arises when women use their voices to demand change. In our efforts to develop an eye catching flyer, we reached out to Luciana Mallozzi, a local illustrator who had created the Borough Improvement League’s holiday card. At our first meeting, Luciana share with us some gorgeous samples of her work and explanations about the symbolism behind the flowers and colors associated with the women’s movement. I hadn’t realized the lovely card she created had such deep thought and meaning wrapped up in the delicate-looking imagery. With that same deliberate consideration, she created this flyer. As we were finalizing the details, we discussed her choice to use vibrant colors, which of course are useful to catch people’s eye. But, as Luciana explained, the more important reason she chose to use such a bold palate was to make a statement encouraging women to speak up, demand attention, and not apologize for taking up space. Hell yes! We are looking forward to receiving submissions that incorporate this strength and power and can’t wait to see how artists interpret this concept.
