After 10 years, I finally got around to sprucing up the entryway to my studio! When we were putting the finishing touches on my studio in 2010, the builder asked what flooring I wanted on the landing which is directly inside the door off the deck. (Incidentally, he referred to this as the “man door” to distinguish it from the large garage doors off the driveway; since then I have always called it my “woman door.”) At the time, I knew I wanted to make it unique but was busy moving in and getting to work in my new space. I temporarily laid a piece of carpet over the plywood and figured I’d get to it eventually. Ten. Years. Later. But this became the first project I dove into during the “stay inside” response to the COVID-19 pandemic and it was due, in large part, to having the assistance of my 18 year old daughter, Abigail. Like most other college students, she is taking her classes online from our house. Since her job ended and she is home with us, she found herself with lots of free time. She gave me the push I needed to get this project moving. We drew up sketches, discussed possible color layouts, dug through bins, boxes, and racks of glass to find the best options, and then got to work cutting glass. Abigail made this whole process fun even though we spent hours crunched into a very small space together, squatting and kneeling until our knees and backs ached. But we also sang, listened to comedy sketches, and talked. In addition to having a beautiful new entry through my woman door, I had the pleasure of spending time with one of the most wonderful people I know.
