I’m working on a new commission which has been in development in my mind and on my iPad for many months. A client asked me to depict a family beach house in stained glass for a birthday gift and sent me multiple photos from different angles to put together and create the image. On January 24, I blogged about how I was learning a new drawing program called Procreate in order to develop the sketches. I’ve found working with Procreate to be a lot of fun; I’m still watching YouTube videos to learn all the things I can do with it. There were a number of elements my client wanted me to include to make this piece really personalized, including these Adirondack chairs. The overall size of the window isn’t large so when it came to creating the chairs, the individual pieces got really tiny! You can see my ruler below one of the chairs in the photo above. As with all Tiffany-style stained glass, each piece is wrapped with copper foil which is what the solder will hold onto when I get to that next step. I decided to play around with some additional features. Since it is a beach house, there’s a lot of sand and I didn’t want to just use sand-colored glass. I developed a technique to use a combination of real beach sand (thanks LBI!) and glass frit (finely ground glass powder) to fuse onto all the beach pieces. Once they were fused, the sand becomes permanent and adds an extra bit of texture. Creating this scene gives me joy as I think of warm days, sitting by the ocean, my toes in the sand. Until we can do that again, we can remember that happy feeling!
