Abby beads.jpg

Ever since I saw an image of the Coronavirus, I’ve wanted to make it in glass. I’ve been working on some other glass elements that I plan to put together in a larger piece about this strange time through which we’re living. But those spiky little viruses were something I had yet to create. My daughter, Abigail, who just finished her freshman year of college (from the couch), was interested in helping me make them. So we pulled out the torches and bead making supplies and got to work. Well, we tried anyway; things just didn’t go our way. When introducing glass rods into a flame, you have to do it carefully or they shatter and I kept doing it too fast and big chunks of glass would fly off. Abigail had her own struggles with getting the red glass to attach onto the white bead. You might notice this picture is of the process not the result? That’s because the results kind of suck. But it’s ok. It gave us an excuse to spend some time together doing something more exciting that watching tv. And we both laughed at ourselves a lot as we struggled. We may try again or I may figure out a different way to create what’s in my head. Part of what I’m trying to appreciate during this “stay inside” time is doing things we don’t usually do. The next adventure for Abigail and me is welding! Is anyone else doing random things with their family members? If so, I’d love to hear about it. Stay safe & have fun!
