This piece was commissioned 8 years ago by a Classics scholar who lives in New York City and wanted me to create a glass piece that included the opening battle scene of the Aenid, two different types of lyres, and some text in Greek. I installed it in a transom above a door in his home study. When he contacted me recently, he shared that they had moved into a new apartment and had an opening created specifically for this piece! He said they had three more windows that they were interested in having stained glass made for and I braced myself for what the theme would be this time. I have to admit, I felt a bit anxious about my Greek painting skills so I breathed easier when he said he wanted these to have tulips, a fleur de lis, and some greenery. It always makes me happy when a client asks me to create something a second time. I’m actually working on another commission at the moment for a repeat client in Metuchen. What I am creating for her is also quite different than I created the first time— probably not to the same degree as this but still a big shift. I appreciate seeing the range of interests my clients have; it keeps it interesting and challenges me. Stay tuned and I will share some more images of these projects in future blog posts.
