This window is one of a commission of four that I am currently creating for a repeat customer. She lives in a beautiful home in Metuchen, decorated in an eclectic blend of styles, and wanted that to carry through to her stained glass windows. Initially when we were discussing the design, she asked if I could use a Victorian style and also incorporate some imagery that is typical of Frank Lloyd Wright. I played around with that idea and decided to divide the space into two symmetrical panels. I created borders with shapes that are typical of Frank Lloyd Wright, squares and chevrons. Within each panel, I created flowing shapes that are often used in Victorian design. Because the same glass colors are used throughout the piece, the styles harmonize and blend together. There are a few other special features within the designs, one of which will be easier to see as the other windows begin to take shape and I will blog about at a later date. The other is a little detail that you may have noticed— in the top portion of the window, there are images of two small animals, a frog and a dog, that are fused onto two pieces of glass. In each of the four windows, there will be two tiny animals at my client’s request. This commission, with its cheerful colors, whimsical animals, and interesting design elements, feels like an antidote to the global struggles that are happening as I am creating them. I’m glad to be using art to bring some joy to my client.
