This week, I started building the first of a three window commission; this is the smaller of two windows which will replace original clear leaded glass windows that have broken and bowed over time. These windows are located on the stairs to the second floor in the front of my client’s home. The deterioration of the old windows bothered the home owners for years but one member of the family is actually quite fond of them. From her perch on the stairs, Roxy the dog can look out of the broken windows and supervise the mailman, the kids, the neighbors, and anyone else who travels up and down the street. A few weeks ago, I had taped up some drawings in the window openings to give my clients a sense of how the new windows will look. Roxy was not pleased with the paper that blocked her view of the street. She sulked around looking miserable and her demeanor actually influenced the selection of the glass! The home owners had selected a heavily textured clear glass for the background to provide privacy. However, in order to keep family harmony, they selected a less textured clear for the two parallel sections near the border so Roxy can look out and carry on her watchdog duties. This kind of decision is what custom work is all about and I aim to please all members of the family, including the furry ones.
