Color me inspired! In December, Bullseye Glass sent out a notification about a film festival called Slamdance. Included in the festival was a documentary featuring a fused glass artist, Tim Carey, who had won a commission to create the world’s largest stained glass window. The film sounded interesting and tickets to Slamdance were available for free for a limited time. I signed up to get access and, with one day left in the film festival, I finally sat down the other day to watch it. I wish I had done it sooner— I could have watched it repeatedly! The story was fascinating; Tim had bid on a commission to create an enormous window and, while he had a vision for the design, he wasn’t sure how to make it. He ended up seeking the guidance of a well known glass artist, Nacissus Quagliata, to help him figure it out. Along the way, the studio that employed him, Judson Studio, had to acquire a new facility and lots of expensive equipment to create it. Plus Tim had to master this technique in order to meet the project’s extremely tight deadline. The film highlighted the drama between the artist and his mentor, tension from the lack of time he had to create it, the massive learning curve needed to put this technique into practice, and such overwhelming beauty that resulted as they labored to create this masterpiece! After it ended, I went online and read more about Tim and found out he was teaching a number of online classes this summer. I signed up immediately for a class that will be held in July; I can’t wait! I’m so grateful for that email that landed in my inbox that opened my eyes to this technique and the amazing artwork that can be created with it.
