Since I started blogging, I aim to post once a week. But at the end of last year, things got so busy in my studio that I didn’t have the time to share what I was working on. If I had, it probably would have looked like on of those films from the 1920’s where the people always look like they’re running. I was trying desperately to finish this memorial box for a client who had commissioned it much earlier in the year. However, with all the emotions involved, the design process took quite a while. And when the design was completed and the glass selected, I was busy with other commissions and shows and unable to spend much time on it. I was able to create the tiny, fused roses in November so those were ready to include. But I didn’t actually start working on it on a regular basis until December and my client really wanted it by Christmas. Ultimately, that happened and she was able to put a container of her mother’s ashes inside this box and place it in a special spot in her home. Like most of my work, this piece is one-of-a-kind; it was created to honor the memory of her mother’s life and her love of flowers and birds was central. When I initially asked her to describe her mother, some of the words she used were cozy, tranquil, positive, gentle, and soothing. In creating this memorial box, I hoped to evoke those feelings, to give my client a beautiful way to keep the joyful spirit of her mom present in her daily life.
