As a small business owner, I generally try to keep my political opinions to myself. I work with a variety of people and don’t want to offend someone who thinks differently than I do. But lately, I am offended. And so, maybe, are you too. His quote that put me over the edge was last week when the (incorrect) jobs report was released and Trump said, “Hopefully George is looking down right now and saying this is a great thing that’s happening for our country.” I could almost hear one of the actors in Hamilton spit back to him, “Probably not ‘cuz George is super dead!” And an idea started forming in my head: make art using his own words and images to depict the tragedy of our nation being exploded by this man. We have a lot of problems right now and could use a real, thoughtful, conscientious leader in the White House which is exactly the opposite of what we have. I started digging through his bizarre quotes and tweets, looking for words and images that demonstrate his destructive persona; there was a lot from which to chose. This is still a work in progress as I am firing the text onto glass strips and fusing his image onto other pieces. Then I’m going to weld together a background to which I will attach it all (spoiler alert: it’s a bomb). This is a major departure from the usual work I do but, at this point, it feels right to go down this road for a while. I’m still creating pretty commissions for clients but I just can’t stop thinking about that self-centered, self-righteous cartoon character who is actively working to divide our country.
