When the pandemic began, I had a backlog of projects. I continued working on them, only getting close to the end of my commissions at the beginning of May. But then a new client reached out, asking me to make a window which they were comfortable measuring for and installing themselves as they were doing multiple renovations and were very handy. A few weeks later, I got a call from another new client who wanted a window but this time they had specific needs; they had a transom with vertical mullions (the wooden separators) which they wanted to be blocked by the stained glass design. The window was high up and they attempted to measure but weren’t certain about the accuracy. Since precision was important, I went to their home and we all wore masks while I climbed up the ladder with a template I had created. It was a good thing I did that since the measurement was off by about an inch and we needed to do some revisions to the design. So, just as in the pre-pandemic days, I got the measurements I needed, saw the designs and colors the clients have in their house and was able to discuss with them in person how I could create the window they wanted. We were just all in masks. Since then, I have done this again with another client and I think that is the new normal. In New Jersey, wearing masks inside businesses is the law and, to me, it makes sense to continue that in a client’s home; it’s the way we show respect to each other. If that’s the concession we make so we stay safe and can still conduct business and live life, I’m ok with it. Masks are the new black!
