Duban in progress.jpg

This is one of three tulip windows I am creating for repeat clients in NYC. In my July 17 blog, I shared about starting this commission although, at that time, my clients wanted to include a fleur de lis too. As I began drawing, they decided they wanted only tulips and leaves. It’s hard to tell from this picture but the background glass is a beautiful transparent amber while the glass for the tulips is rich and opaque. That contrast makes the flowers appear to come forward while the background recedes. This is a work in progress photo with the copper foil that wraps each piece of glass still visible. In the next step, silver solder will be applied, covering all the copper and holding everything together. After that, the silver solder will be painted black making the metal less prominent and allowing the glass to take center stage again. Then there is a whole lot of cleaning, framing and installation. There are two other windows so I am seeing tulips in my sleep but as a Dutch girl, that makes me completely happy!
